A Celebration of Our Land
Canada is an immense land, the second largest country in the world, that extends from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic, and from the United States bordér to the North Pole. Halifax on the east coast is a greater distance from Vancouver on the west coast than it is from London, England. That over-whelming size is an important consideration because it creates a diversity of climate and vegetation that has affected the humán environment greatly, and alsó because much of this vast area remains undeveloped. Canadas breathtaking scenery is a study in contrasts: there are rugged mountain ranges, lush forests, golden prairies, and enormous rivers and lakes.
Indeed, one-thirteenth of Canada is fresh water. The St. Lawrence River, the world's most important waterway, drains the Great Lakes and is the main route from the Atlantic to the interior. Peninsulas and inlets make up much of the far northern coast with Hudson Bay jutting south like a great inland sea. Canada's eastern and western coastlines are among the longest in the world, and the seas boast a wealth of fish. The Rocky Mountains in the west provide somé of the most striking vistas to be found anywhere. From the foot of the Rockies, the prairies stretch eastward, forming the breadbasket of Canada where the bulk of the country's crops are grown. Finally, there are the hills and coasts of eastern Canada, offering still more remarkable beauty. No region of the country is without its distinctive flavour, and every town and city offers a unique appeal. From St. John's and Halifax, with their warm hospitality, and guebec City with its Gallic joie de vivre, to the wild-west excitement of Calgary and the úrban style ofVancouver, Canada's scenic and multi-cultural variety are enjoyed by more and more visitors each year.
Canada is an intriguing blend of modern sophistication and old-fashioned charm, of technological progress and untapped potential. There are frontiers still waiting to be conquered and that challenge fíres the imagination of the proud Canadian people. With sparkling text and a spectacular collection of ftill-colour photographs, this book is everything its title suggests: a pictorial celebration of Canada's pást, and the special people and remarkable land that make up Canada's present and future.
