Callanetics was originally developed to improve back problems through the use of small and delicate movements consistently applied. Callan Pinckney was born with spinal curvature, one hip higher than the other and feet turned inwards so severely that she had to wear leg braces to the waist for seven years of her childhood. In 1961, she ran away from home in Georgia to see the world, surviving through a series of menial jobs, from shovelling snow in London, selling peanuts in Tokyo to waltressing in Cape Tovm. But her rootless lifestyle took its toll. By the time she finally returned to the States in 1972, she was in constant pain, surgery had been suggested for her travel-damaged knees, and she was told that her back would never recover.
After returning to New York, Callan began to experiment with exercise techniques, using her early ballet training to develop the programme which finally solved her physical problems. She has taught her revolutionary exercise programme for over fifteen years, and has had many famous and distinguished clients worldwide, all of whom testify that Callanetics is a unique, safe exercise system for transforming body shape.
