I Free radicals and their metabolites have long been known for their effects on mechanisms regulating cellular function. The focus of this monograph is the nature of oxygen-derived free radicals, their activities on several physiological systems and the significance of this knowledge towards better understanding the biological properties of free-radical actions as well as their effects for medicine. Chapters elaborate the occurrence of oxygen free radicals in a variety of tissues and examine their implication in the microbial and inflammatory activity of neutrophils, in lung injury, in myocardial cellular injury, and in skeletal muscle disorders. Furthermore, the relationship between free radicals, CNS processes and brain function is also analyzed.
