In this two-volume publication, leading specialists summarize current knowledge on the cardiovascular effects of anesthesia, the regional effects of anesthetics on systems, organs, and tissues, and the clinical implications of these effects. A continuous blend of experimental and clinical data throughout the papers provides a well-balanced perspective on the mechanisms of anesthesia and anesthetic techniques. In addition to evaluating past as well as current work in the field, contributions offer guidelines for future study.
The two volumes contain a wealth of original data which reflect the rapid advances presently taking place in the research laboratory. Each chapter, unique in scope and content, will be important reading for anesthesiologists, cardiovascular specialists and physiologists, internists, surgeons and critical care specialists, as well as obstetricians.

Each chapter, unique in scope and content, will be important reading for anesthesiologists, cardiovascular specialists and physiologists, internists, surgeons and critical care specialists, as well as obstetricians.
Volume 1 considers the mechanisms of action of various anesthetics, such as general and local anesthetics, narcotic analgesics, and neuromuscular blocking agents, and how these anesthetics might be expected to interfere with cardiovascular functions. Results are derived from experimental studies and take into consideration the inherent and extraneous factors which can modify cardiovascular responses to anesthetics. The volume also discusses other substances which have significant physiologic effects on the cardiovascular system during anesthesia and surgery including certain cardioactive drugs and neuro-humoral substances.
Volume 2 features seven chapters concerned with the effects of anesthetics on blood flow and distribution within various organ systems. The second section in this volume reviews the cardiovascular actions of anesthetics in patients with specific pathophysiologic conditions such as shock and trauma, and in pediatric patients. /
