A Building Strategies az Opening Strategies vagy a Starting Strategies című első kötetre épül, de jól használható más kezdő nyelvkönyv folytatásaként is, egy évi tanulás, mintegy 90-120 óra után. A könyv 16 leckéből áll, ezek közül három ismétlő jellegű. Minden lecke az új anyagot bemutató párbeszéddel és összefüggő szöveggel kezdődik, ezeket követik az új anyagot más formában bemutató és feldolgozó anyagok és gyakorlatok. Az első leckében ismerkedünk meg a könyv állandó szereplőivel és a helyszínnel, Bristollal és környékével. Az ismétlő leckékben szerepjátékok és játékok is találhatók. A gyakorlatok három szinten gyakoroltatják az anyagot, először a jelenség ismétlése a feladat, utána a nyelvi anyag irányított gyakorlása következik, végül a teljesen önálló használat. Három index segít a tájékozódásban, az első leckék szerint tartalmazza a nyelvtani anyagot és az előforduló szavakat, a második az egész nyelvtant foglalja össze, a harmadik a témakörök szerint elrendezett szójegyzéket. A Workbook-ban található a funkciók szerinti index és a szavak betűrendbe szedve, magyar jelentésükkel együtt.
A Building Strategies fő célja a beszédkészség fejlesztése. Olyan nyelvi ismereteket nyújt, amelyekre a mindennapi életben állandóan szükség van, túllép az első kötet rövid kommunikációs gyakorlatain, és már a hosszabb összefüggő szövegek elmondását is célul tűzi ki. Noha alapvetően funkcionális szemléletű, nem hanyagolja el a nyelvtan tanítását sem, felidézi és tovább finomítja az első kötetben már megismertetett szerkezeteket. Tanít jegyzetelni, és eljuttat az összefüggő fogalmazás szintjéig. A tanuló sok hasznos információt szerez Nagy-Britanniáról is. A funkcionális megközelítés segítségével a tanuló megtanulja, mit milyen körülmények között mondhat, a nyelvtani szerkezetek gyakoroltatása a pontos megfogalmazást segíti elő, mindez egybeötvözve jelenik meg a könyvben. Building Strategies is the second book in the Strategies series - a series which takes students from beginners' level to First Certificate level. Building Strategies is for elementary and pre-intermediate students who have studied English for at least 120 hours of class time. Building Strategies takes the communicative needs of the learner as its first priority and, at the same time, covers the important grammatical structures of the language. These are presented in a practical and systematic way throughout the 16 units which provide for approximately 100-120 teaching hours. Building Strategies presents language in a visually exciting and nighly motivating way, and in real life contexts which are related to the learner's own experience. Building Strategies provides thorough practice in the four skills - reading, writing, listening and speaking - through a variety of excercise types, activities and games. It trains the student in important discourse functions such as description, instruction, explanation and narration. It alsó encourages the development of reading through a number of contemporary edited texts. Building Strategies can be used in preparation for the RSA Communicative Use of English exam. Building Strategies is accompanied by cassettes, a workbook, a test booklet and a teacher's book. The set of cassettes contain presentation dialogues, open dialogues, listening passages and oral exercises, and the listening passages which make up the listening skills section of Building Strategies Tests. The Teacher's Book contains an introduction to the principles underlying the course, practical teaching techniques, step-by-step teaching notes, transcripts of all the recorded material and a key to the tests. A videó film, Family Affair, incorporates the key language presented in Building Strategies in the same sequence as it appears in the book. Family Affair has its own students' book and teacher's guide and can be used independently of the course book with any preintermediate and intermediate students.
