As a landscape painter he broke quite new ground; his famous series of the Months surpasses, even Titian in its feeling for nature and for the unity of man with his surroundings. But his genius is most typically expressed in his depictions of peasant life, where sharply observed scenes of village customs are used to draw highly sophisticated conclusions on the morals of man.
