THE WORLD OF ART
Bruegel
v-'v.' . Walter S. Gibson
1 53 plates, 20 in color
Eminently a genius of his time, the brilliant Flemish Renaissance, Pieter Bruegel the Elder has enjoyed both admiration and popularity for four hundred years. He belongs, with Michelangelo, Rembrandt, and Van Gogh, to that select company of artists who enjoy universal esteem in our time.
Although Bruegel's pictures have become a familiar part of our lives, the artist himself remains a shadowy and misunderstood figure. For Bruegel's many modern admirers this new critical introduction and biography will open up the sixteenth-century world in which he lived, and add to their enjoyment of his pictures. Gibson, whose main interest has been in Dutch and Flemish painting of that period, analyzes the different strands of the artist's inspiration, work, and influence, and removes misconceptions about his personality and his background.

One need not seek far for the reasons for Bruegel's popularity. His well-fed jolly peasants belong to an Arcadian past which knew nothing of nuclear weapons, energy crises, and other problems besetting modern life. His vast, glowing landscapes offer a welcome relief from the brick and concrete drabness of our urban environment, and his strong colors and bold compositions appeal to the modern taste for abstract design. His 'spookish scenes and drolleries', as a seventeenth-century critic termed them, suggest enigmas, too, that have haunted humanity through the ages.
Walter S. Gibson is Associate Professor and Chairman of the Department of Art at Case Western Reserve University. Vissza
