To many people watercolour is still an inferior medium to that of oils. The plethora of work produced in the Victoria era has contributed much to the view that it is an art for amateurs; a view that this book vigorously contests.
Over the period from the late 1500s until the present day a great wealth of vibrant and original work has been produced in watercolour. As well as illustrating the wide range of subject matter to be found in British watercolour paintings, and thus firmly refuting the charge of insipidity which this medium has often had to face, this book explains in its introduction and exemplifies in the 60 colour plates, the variety of different techniques which can be used in watercolour painting. Thus the history, the methods and the paintings of British watercolourists have been elaborated and generously illustrated in the specially selected works reproduced in this book.
Robin Reilly is a partner in the.Hogarth Galleries and consultant for European painting to the Reilly Gallery, New Orleans, of which he was one of the original partners. He has written many books on history and the arts, being author, also, of Wedgwood Jasper in this series.
