As an illustrated introduction, there is included a useful potted history of the develop-ment of British naval aviation and the evolution of deck-flying from the earliest tentative experiments to such inventions as the angled deck, steam catapults and mirror landing aids, all British inventions. Appendices contain descriptions and illustrations of lighter-than-air aircraft (known as 'blimps') of the R.N.A.S. between 1914 and 1918, the rigid airships R.9 to R.34 and details of all the aircraft carriers and other ships which have ever embarked fixed-wing aircraft or helicopters, from H.M.S. Africa of 1912 to the most recent cruiser conversions such as H.M.S. Tiger.
