An illustrated regional guide to town and country planning in Britain with examples ranging from prehistoric sites to the modern new town and shopping centre, the book sets out to illustrate the attempts that have been made by man to control and plan his social and physical environment. It describes the physical expressions of autocratic planning systems from early defensive sites and the strategic Roman road system to the gracious urban architecture of the 17th and 18th centuries and the impact on our towns of the Industrial Revolution. It also illustrates the more recent concern which has centred on the creation of a planning system which can exercise democratic control over the structure and quality of the physical environment.
Compiled and written by professional planners, it is intended to give both the layman and the professional an appreciation of man's ability to control his environment. It is also meant to give the student planner and overseas visitor a bird's eye view... Tovább

It is also meant to give the student planner and overseas visitor a bird's eye view of interesting sites in every region of the country which reflect the history of man-made developments.
The United Kingdom is divided into fifteen regions, and each regional chapter contains a map of the sites mentioned. This is followed by an introductory article synthesising the evolution of planning in the region written by a professional planner. Sites in each region are described in a gazetteer arranged as convenient tours and illustrated with photographs of sites referred to in each tour. A subject index lists the 332 sites under headings such as 'conservation in towns' and 'defence sites', and a glossary at the end explains commonly-used planning terms and defines the characteristics of the principal Planning Acts referred to in the text.
