BRITAIN FROM THE AIR
Great Britain is a country steeped in history. Over thou-
sands of years this relatively small island has seen its
human inhabitants erect marvels from Stonehenge to
the Millennium Dome, fight wars in castle strong-
holds, build great centres of learning such as Oxford's
dreaming spires and complete great feats of engineer-
ing skill. From being a small northern outpost of the
Roman Empire it grew to rule over an even greater
empire of its own and now the people of that empire
have flocked to Britain's shores to create one of the
most dynamic and vivid multicultural societies in the
world. Yet for all the human activity across the land-

BRITAIN FROM THE AIR
Great Britain is a country steeped in history. Over thou-
sands of years this relatively small island has seen its
human inhabitants erect marvels from Stonehenge to
the Millennium Dome, fight wars in castle strong-
holds, build great centres of learning such as Oxford's
dreaming spires and complete great feats of engineer-
ing skill. From being a small northern outpost of the
Roman Empire it grew to rule over an even greater
empire of its own and now the people of that empire
have flocked to Britain's shores to create one of the
most dynamic and vivid multicultural societies in the
world. Yet for all the human activity across the land-
scape, much of Great Britain remains as green and
beautiful now as it was in the past when the country-
side inspired the Romantic poets. The Lake District, the
Pennines, and the Highlands of Scotland continue to
thrill visitors with their wild peaks while further south
rolling meadows and verdant river valleys have a time-
less serenity. Around the coasts a rich variety of habi-
tats provide a haven for a profusion of different flora
and fauna.
Britain From the Air takes flight across this
remarkable country to explore its past and present, its
countryside, towns and cities from a different per-
spective. A much broader portrait of the country
unfurls from above; unobscured, its castles, cathe-
drals, rivers and mountains can be seen in a detail and
completeness that is impossible to duplicate from the
ground. These vistas show Britain's complexity, where
history co-exists with the most modern, and heavy
industry with the most breathtaking countryside in the
world. Britain From the Air tells the story of a country
that has existed since the dawn of Western civilisation,
and is continuing a tradition of evolution and progress
into a new millennium.
