It has been known for some time that the permeability properties of the brain are unique for this organ; indeed this "Blood Brain Barrier" is one of the properties in which the nervous system is different from the rest of the organism. Recently this field has been investigated with new methods of approach, and a conference on this topic, was organized by Drs. Ford and Lajtha near Amsterdam, which resulted in the present book. This conference, which showed that the old concept of a single barrier does not explain all observations, had the appropriate title "The Brain Barrier System". It was the first symposium to review critically the latest standing of this complex field in all its aspects. The composition of membranes and their structure was discussed and it was clearly shown, not only that we can explain all the complexities with structure, but, that the structural components can be changed in altering states of the nervous system. Perhaps these factors, (a) the complexity of the system, and (b) the ability of the system to respond to outside stimuli, were the two most important features that emerged from the conference.
