To garden naturally, you have to be organic. It is the basic foundation of an environmentally friendly approach. But being an organic gardener does not mean casting aside everything you have ever learned and embracing a new and complex set of rules. It simply means trying to achieve the right balance of ecologically sound, natural and sustainable practice.
The essence of this lies in the soil. If you create a healthy soil in which plants can flourish, you can also create a food chain in which predators and prey maintain a natural balance, and do most of the pest control for you. Indeed, if you get this element right, you can to a large extent relax and let nature do the work.
The other important factor is to nurture the plants well. Plants want to grow -the organic gardener's task is to remove obstacles from their path. This means choosing the right plant for the right place and giving it the best possible conditions.
While most people think of organic produce in terms of fruit and vegetables. Bob Flowerdew's methods can equally easily be applied to the ornamental garden. But, he says, why not choose plants that are productive or useful as well as decorative? If you want blossom, opt for a fruiting variety of cherry or almond rather than a purely ornamental one. And always go for a plant that will attract as many bees and butterflies as possible into your garden.
Although there are some guidelines that the organic gardener should not ignore, they may be applied to gardens of any size and of any type. What Bob Flowerdew's Organic Bible aims to do is present the choices open to every one of us - and the best way of enjoying them. The photos, taken in Bob's own garden, show just how to make a beautiful garden productive and a productive garden beautiful.
