It was no secret among members of
the Washington diplomatic corps that
Mavis Ironmonger, the beautiful wife
of the first Ambassador to the United
States from the newly independent re-
public of Tampica, was involved in
scandalous love affairs.
When invitations are sent out for
a reception at the Tampican embassy
the prospective party has all of Wash-
ington astir, and members of the
embassy nervously anticipate an embar-
rassing scene with Mavis at its center.
The night of the party the impetuous
woman manages to elude the watchful
eyes of the embassy staff and to insult
an Israeli diplomat to his face.
Mavis is removed to her bedroom,
seemingly in a drunken stupor, but a
few hours later her corpse is discovered.
Suicide is ruled out by an autopsy, and
to avoid further publicity Chief Super-
intendent of Scotland Yard Henry Tib-
bett is called in to conduct a discreet
investigation.
