An Introduction to the World of Birds
Illustrations by AD CAMERON Text by DR. CHRISTOPHER PERKINS
Over 500 illustrations in full colour

BIRDS have always held a fascination for man. They have figured prominently in art and mythology since the Stone Age. Bird-spotting and egg-collecting have been popular for years and, more recently, bird-watching has become a widespread and serious hobby, especially in Europe and the United States. From these interests has grown an enormous popular literature on birds, but most of it suffers from two major limitations. Firstly, most bird books already published concentrate on their external appearance and, secondly, these books have usually been devoted to a description of species which live in particular regions of the world.

In this volume, birds are treated, not as museum specimens or subjects simply to be identified and catalogued, but as living animals. The author discusses their evolution, anatomy, feeding, habitats, social behaviour, breeding and migration. The book therefore covers all aspects of avian biology. But what makes it so absolutely outstanding is its illustrations. Points made in the text are demonstrated by superb paintings by the Dutch artist and naturalist Ad Cameron, one of the world's leading bird artists. The pictures depict birds in their natural postures and serve as a record, not only of the birds themselves, but ot their modes of behaviour. The birds depicted come both from common European and American species and from the more exotic forms found in Africa, Australia, South America and Asia. Vissza
