Shock The individual and society are today very sensitive to the problems of senescence, and enjoy and suffer at the same time from the paradox of longer and healthier lives, relatively shorter working lives, and more hours of leisure. This problem is of worldwide interest and requires the combined and simultaneous efforts of experimentál and humán biology, of practical medicine and psychology, and of the principles and methods of humán development and social organization. This volume deals primarily with basic biological problems of aging. These include genetic aspects; age changes in cellular structure and function; the effects of environmental factors such as temperature, altitude, and radiation on longevity; body composition; neurophysiology and sleep; and the role of connective tissues in aging. Longevity experiments on insects, mice, and rats have provided interesting data, but it is generally agreed that many more studies are needed before conclusions... Tovább
