Biblical/Medical Ethics
The current moral tone and imprecision of medical choice mandates that the Christian, his family, and his church be active participants in medical decisions.
The need for medical care touches the life of every individual. In recent years, the practice of medicine has had an increasing, even destructive .power over the family. Consider these facts:
• Teenagers may abort their unborn children without
parental consent
• Children may be treated for veneral disease, pregnancy and drug abuse without consent
• Parents and spouses are isolated from their loved ones in Intensive and Coronary Care Units
• On the testimony of physicians, children can be removed from homes for medical treatment for which parents will not grant permission

• Pyschiatrists are becoming the primary resource to the needs and problems of children
Christians in both the medical and nonmedical arenas need to assess accurately the true morality of common medical problems. The Christian, his family, and the church should be active participants in medical decisions. This overwhelming responsibility makes Biblical/Medical Ethics critical reading for every individual, family, physician, pastor and counselor. It's wealth of information answers basic questions like these:
• What is the biblical concept of health?
• How is sin related to sickness?
• What are the biblical principles of healing?
• Can medical problems be resolved with the application of biblical principles?
• How should a Christian choose a physician?
• Should Christians consult psychotherapists?
• What is the role of the church in health care?
• How can mental illness be treated from a Christian perspective?
• What are the powers and dangers of the death and dying movement?
• How should the Christian approach suffering?
• What are the biblical priorities for physicians and medical students?
• How can a biblical medical practice be established?
(Continued on back flap)
In a field dominated by secular thinking, Biblical/Medical Ethics: The Christian and the Practice of Medicine is unique. It does not copy or rationalize worldly principles but boldly describes medical care based solely on biblical ideas.
Dr. Payne is concerned that Christians have been overly influenced by secular and scientific thinking which is often at enmity with biblical truth, and have therefore not taken a broad or biblical approach to medical ethics. In this book, which is for both physicians and laymen, Christian ethics is clearly contrasted with non-Christian ethics. Dr. Payne shows that a methodology for biblical/medical ethics is possible. Where medical science has a tenuous scientific base, he notes and references its fallacies. Psychotherapy, so often a danger to the church, is also critically assessed. The author reviews what the Bible says of medical practice, describes the role of the church in health care, discusses within a biblical context such problems as abortion and euthanasia, and offers physicians and medical students specific directions personally and professionally. He also gives directions for the continued development of a biblical/medical ethic.
Franklin Edward Payne, Jr., M.D. is Associate Professor, Department of Family Practice, at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, and active in the private practice of family medicine. Dr. Payne is a Christian counselor, seminar leader, Sunday school teacher, and frequent contributor to journals and medical books. A member of the National Association of Nouthetic Counselors, the Christian Medical Society and numerous other medical societies, Ed Payne lives in Augusta with his wife Jean and their four children. His special interests include golf and long distance running.
