Beyond the Limits is the sequel to The Limits to Growth. That was published twenty years ago by the Club of Romé and showed that if growth trends continued unchanged, the limits to physical growth on the planet would be reached within a 100 years. It created headlines around the world and sold 9 millión copies in 29 languages.
Many refused to accept its conclusions. Yet the global scientific evidence since then has confirmed them. Now, three of the four originál authors have marshalled that evidence to write Beyond the Limits. They show that the world has already overshot somé of its limits and, ifpresent trends continue, we face the virtually certain prospect of a global collapse, perhaps within the lifetimes of children alive today.

Beyond the Limits is the sequel to The Limits to Growth.
But that is not the only option. Beyond the Limits presents us in extraordinarily clear terms with a warning and a choice: a rapid and uncontrolled decline in food production, industrial capacity, population and life-expectancy, or a sustainable future. By using their computer model as a unique tool to project the future, and by varying the basic global policy assumptions, they describe a rangé of possible outcomes.
They show that a sustainable society is technically and economically feasible, if growth in material consumption and population are eased down and there is a drastic increase in the efficiency of our use of materials and energy. To make that transition we will have to balance our long and short term goals with much greater care, enhancing equity and the quality of life. And for that, we will need the wisdom, far-sightedness and magnanimity that this book exemplifies.
'This book is essential reading for everybody who is concerned with the central issue of our times: how to achieve a transition to a sustainable global future.'
Gro Harlem Brundtland, Prime Minister of Norway and Chairman of The World Commission on Environment and Development.
