During the period between August Ist, 1942 and August 16th, 1943, experimentál leg surgery had been performed by Nazi physicians at the Ravensbrück eoncentration camp on seventy-four Poles, political prisoners, young healthy women. The purpose of these operations was to infect the wounds with bacteria and then test the effectivenes-s of sulfa drugs in treating them. For studies on regeneration and transplantationi of bone and tissue, operations on muscles, bones and nerves were performed. Somé of the victims of these inhuman experiments died directly after the operations, somé with still unhealed wounds were executed in the camp, somé - thanks to their own determination and the solidarity of the prison mates - managed to save their lives. A few of them died later at home, already after the war - in each case as a result of inflicted surgery. Among those who survived-around one-fourth - are crippled for' life.
