This authoritative and handsomely illustrated book is a portrait in depth of the South during its greatest trial, told in terms of the men and women who lived and perished during four long years of turmoil and strife.
Professor Wiley's narrative, based on years of research makes a solid contribution to our knowledge of how the Confederate government—its civilian and military es-tabhshments—was organized and functioned.
It includes a useful compilation of hard-to-find facts and dates about the C ¦''•deracy as weir as profiles of Jeffersor
the members of his cabinet, state governors and generals, and an analysis of their contributions to the cause of independence.
But the chief emphasis is on Southern people from all walks of hte, their hopes and doubts, their humor and grief, their dedication and sacrifices frequently revealed In their own words in letters, diaries and newspapers of the period. There are fascinating chapters on the life of the Confederate soldiers, enlisted men and officers; on the achievements of the Confederate Navy; on the dally life of civilians in tovra and country; on the loyalty and devotion of Confederate women—"the staunchest rebels"; on Confederate arms— rifles, pistols, and artillery; and many more topics of unusual interest.
While the Confederacy had no one as eminent as Mathew BiOTy (though there are a number of Brady photographs Included here), there were some excellent Southern photographers, such as George S. Cook and Julian Vannerson. And there were scores of local cameramen whose names are lost to history who set up shop in towns and camps to make hkenesses of John Reb and his loved ones.
There have been many books about the battles and military campaigns of the Civil War, but Embattled Confederates Is the first full-length portrait of the Confederate people In action.
Bell Irvln Wiley of Emory University is a distinguished historian and author of They Who Fought Here and many other books. Hirst Mllhollen, Curator of Photographs at the Library of Congress, has been collecting these photographs and drawings from libraries, museums, antique shops, and private homes for many years. He has contributed pictures to a number of books, including Divided We Fought and Horsemen, Blue and Gray.
