Basil Willey is King Edward VII Professor of English Literature at Cambridge Unversity, where he has been a lecturer in English since 1923. He has twice served as a visiting professor at American universités: at Columbia University in 1948-1949 and at Cornell University in 1953. Professor Willey's other books include The Seventeenth Century Background (1934), Nineteenth Century Studies (1949), Christianity Past and Present (1952) and More Nineteenth Century Studies (1956).
