A city boy but always fascinated by nature, he was born in Brooklyn in 1917, was graduated from Columbia in 1937, received his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in biology from Harvard. He has been, since 1947, on the faculty of Washington University in St. Louis and is now Director of its Center for the Biology of Natural Systems.
