People, States and Fear: The National Security Problem in International Relations BARRY BUZAN
"THIS IS THE FIRST SYSTEMATIC and in-depth examination of the concept of national security, and of the implications of the security dilemma. It is a searching analysis, rooted in a thorough grounding of the international theory and strategic studies, literatures, and in the author's compelling logic. This innovative study should help considerably in reintegrating strategic studies - which have become too highly technical — into the mainstream of theorising in international relations. The volume should be required reading for all those interested in the problems of national security and arms control in an international system characterised by endemic conflict and the ever-present threat of nuclear war." - PROFESSOR K. J. HOLSTI, Department of Political Science, University of British Columbia.

"This is an original and comprehensive analysis of the central concept of 'security'. The theoretical treatment is rigorous but the argument is amply illustrated with historical examples and does not stray from political reality." JOSEPH FRANKEL, Emeritus Professor of Politics at the University of Southampton.
BARRY BUZAN received his Doctorate from London University in 1973 for a study of the British peace movement between the wars. During the 1970s, he worked mostly on law of the sea issues, publishing widely on the process of negotiation, on Canadian policy, and on security aspects. Works from this period include Seabed Politics (Praeger, 1976); A Sea of Troubles? (Adelphi 143, IISS, 1978); and Negotiating by Consensus (American Journal of International Law, 75 : 2,1981) which was awarded the Francis Deak Prize in 1982. Since the later 1970s, Dr. Buzan has been studying and writing on the theoretical side of the national security problem in international relations. He is lecturer in International Studies at the University of Warwick, where his primary responsibility is for Strategic Studies. Vissza
