The author Fr. Bargil Pixner is a Benedictine monk of the Dormition Abbey in Jerusalem. He has lived in Israel for a quarter of a century, half of it at the Sea of Galilee. Among his many activities, he is responsible for introducing the Dormition Abbey's theology students - Catholic and Protestant - in archaeology and biblical topography. He has led countless groups through the country. With his well-founded knowledge of the Holy Land and its history he draws a lively and persuasive image of the times of turmoil in which Jesus lived. Recent excavations and discoveries shed light on contemporary groups such as the Natzoreans, Essenes, Pharisees and Zealots.
