Fr. Bargil Pixner is prior of the Benedictine community of the Dormition Abbey in Jerusalem. He has lived in Israel for over twenty five years. Among his many activities, he is responsible for introducing the Dormition Abbey's theology students - Catholic and Protestant - to archaeology and biblical topography. He has led numerous groups through the country. As an archaeologist he uncovered parts of the Essene Quarter on Mt. Zion. Using his well-founded knowledge of the Holy Land and its history he draws a lively and persuasive image of Jesus and his time. Who was responsible for Jesus' death? They deliberately decided to have this book edited and published by an Israeli publisher. This reflects a new approach that allows Jews to see Jesus as a teacher and preacher, a son of their own people, and Christians to view the Jewish people in a new spirit of openess.
