In this book Barbara Wootton seeks to uncover some of the social influences which affect the determination of wage and salary rates. The pay of every worker—be he miner, doctor, shipwright or archbishop—is found to be not only the result of a bargain in economic terms, but also an expression of the social attitudes on the part of the community. Moreover, the growth during the present century both of collective bargaining and of the practice of submitting wage claims to arbitration has greatly encouraged the discussion of wage and salary questions on a social and ethical, rather than a purely economic, plane.

Using contemporary Britain as a case study, Barbara Wootton seeks to discover, first, what the social sciences have to say about those people—criminals and others—whose conduct is socially unacceptable; and, second, what can be learned from work in this field which may increase our understanding of the potentialities and the limitations of those sciences generally.
The book is in three parts. In the first, the author critically examines, in the light of the findings of numerous researches, both the relation between unacceptable behaviour and economic and social status, and the validity of a number of currently popular hypotheses, as, for example, that antisocial attitudes are due to lack of maternal affection in infancy, or that problem families beget problem families generation after generation. In the second, she discusses the blurring of the line between sickness and sin for which the growth of modern psychiatry is responsible, and considers the effects of this in shaping contemporary attitudes towards unwelcome deviants and contemporary conceptions of social work. In the final section of the work some of the wider methodological implications are explored.
Throughout, Barbara Wootton has drawn upon her extensive experience as a magistrate as well as upon her academic knowledge. She describes it as 'not a work of research, so much as an assessment of the results of researches undertaken by others'. It is, however, a great deal more than this. An incisive interpretation of these researches is set down with freshness and lucidity. The preparation of Social Science and Social Pathology was made possible by the generosity of the Nuffield Foundation, and incorporates in a greatly expanded form the substance of the Josiah Mason lectures delivered at the University of Birmingham in 1955.
