A once-upon-a-time king and queen, alas, had no children but they did have a wonderful white rat. Unfortunately, though, when all was said and 'done, she was still a rat. So they went to the local fairy queen and had her changed into a princess. All goes well until it comes time for the princess to marry. Allowed whomever she fancies, she fixes upon wedding the most powerful husband in the world. And the husband whom the choosy maiden finally settles on is, considering her origins, quite the drollest touch of the story!

BARBARA SCHILLER, author of the kitchen knight and the vine-landers' saga, studied English and journalism at Syracuse University. Her interest in writing as well as history led her into the publishing world as a copywriter, editor, and reviewer. Now living in New York City with her husband and their son, Thomas, she enjoys exploring the city, reading history and modern literature, and, of course, writing.
ADRIENNE ADAMS, one of the most distinguished and respected names in the field of children's book illustration, has twice been runner-up for the Caldecott Award. She has illustrated numerous books for children, among them cabbage moon by Jan Wahl and the twelve dancing princesses by Andrew Lang. Vissza
