When six months after the death of her husband the Earl, the Countess of Denholm dies, their daughter Theresa is left alone in
the world.
She has had a quiet country upbringing. Many years before, her father had deserted his family for the gaiety and beautiful women of
the Second Empire Society in Paris.
Theresa finds that she has inherited a fortune, but, as she wonders what she will do, her uncle arrives unexpectedly. He has inherited the title and is now her legal guardian. Theresa is horrified to be told that to avoid fortune hunters she is to marry his son, whom she has never met. Not yet of age, there seems to be no legal way she can
escape an enforced marriage.
Theresa determines to run away to Francé where she obtains a position as a Chef in the isolated Chateau of the Marquis de Sare. Deep in the lovely countryside of south-west Francé, delighted with the horses and the wild animals of the Marquis' priváté menagerie, she feels safe from her uncle and the attentions of fortune hunters.
Then the Marquis, bored with the pleasures of Paris, decides to visit his country estate. Contemptuous of women, he is used to breaking hearts but is himself untouchable. He represents everything that Theresa has learned to distrust and hate.
The Marquis is astonished on his arrival to find his hitherto ferocious tiger in the arms of a young girl. This is the beginning of what is to
be a passionate, unexpected love.
