Backstreets is a book about prostitution - insightful, compelling, disturbing. The authors reveal the world of prostitution in its routine, everyday reality: not an exotic world far removed from the lives of ordinary people, but a v/orld which lies at the centre of our cities and societies.
Backstreets Moy/s the individuals who participate in prostitution to tell their own stories. Why do women become prostitutes and how do they experience the daily sequence of 'tricks'? 'A comprehensive, detailed and important work about prostitution - one of the oldest expressions of violence against women.'
Pat Carlen
'Backstreets is a major breakthrough that takes us into the daily, lived experiences of prostitution to reveal its harsh and brutal realities. Nowhere else have we seen the violation that prostitution is to women so fully and sensitively revealed. From women's lives Backstreets exposes the lies of liberal romanticization of prostitution. The unavoidable conclusion of this work is that we must challenge every social condition that gives men license to use women in these ways.'
Kathleen Barry
