This fourth edition has been completely revised, and the chapters dealing with relays and protective systems and the glossary of protective gear engineering terms have been re-edited. An additional chapter dealing with the earthing of power-system neutrals lias been included, as this subject is closely associated with the design and application of most types of protective systems. Information regarding the selection and performance of protective gear normally provided on modern electrical equipments has been added so that students and engineers, who have no specialized knowledge on the application of such protective systems, may appreciate present day British practice in this respect.

Some time ago a new edition was required but the publishers greatly regret having to record the death of the author, Mr. G. W. Stubbings, which occurred during the work of revision. Mr. C. M. Dobson, of the Switchgear Engineering Department of the British Thomson-Houston Company, who had been in close collaboration with Mr. Stubbings during this period, was able to undertake the completion of the revision work and the publishers are very grateful to him for thus ensuring the continued life of this well-established textbook.
