The booklet you are about to read involves autoimmune diseases, a condition where the immuné system instead of protecting us from foreign invaders (viruses, bacteria and parasites) go astray and attacks our own tissues and organs. There are more than 80 recognized autoimmune diseases, somé of which are quite common (like rheumatoid arthritis and thyroid autoimmune diseases), while others are extremely rare. Overall, autoimmune conditions were reported to be a significant factor in death of young females and in morbidity in all ages. The diagnosis of these autoimmune diseases is based on clinical manifestations and may be confirmed with blood tests. In these serological blood tests, typical autoantibodies (the missiles sent back by mistake against self molecules) are recognized and aid in the proper final diagnosis.
