AUTHENTIC FRENCH PROVINCIAL FURNITURE
from Provence, Normandy and Brittany
Henri Al^oud, Leon LeClerc and Paul Banéat
This superb sourcebook presents i79photographs of important examples of French provincial furniture in museums and private collections in France. Most are furnishings of grand scale: draped four-poster beds, armoires, secretaries, buffets, credenzas and commodes. But chairs, tables, clocks and accessories are depicted as well, often in room arrangements typical of the periods represented.
Most of these imposing pieces of furniture, chosen to represent the provinces of Brittany, Normandy and Provence, are shown on full-page plates, so the rich detail of the carving can be seen clearly. Among them are a number of armoires, ranging from a comparatively simple Breton armoire from the age of Louis XIII to an exuberant grande armoire of a later period in carved walnut from the bishop's palace at Uzes.
Here, too, are richly carved bridal chests, 18th-century Norman chairs, an elaborate Breton prie-dieu, a grand drop-front secretary from Provence and more than a hundred other centuries-old masterpieces of the cabinetmaker's art. A few pieces date from the Renaissance and a few others from the 19th century, but most are of the 17th and 18th centuries. A number of furnished interiors are shown representing typical homes of Normans, Bretons and Provençaux of varying life-styles.
It is difficult to overstate the value and importance of this remarkable book because it displays so many seldom-seen works of such splendid conception and execution, most of them virtually unknown beyond the boundaries of their provincial origins. Collectors, scholars, decorators and enthusiasts of French provincial furniture will delight in these rare and authentic exemplars of one of the most admired furnishing styles in the history of the decorative arts.
