Australia is a vast land, over 7,600,000 square kilometres in area, which slumbered in the cradle of time for aeons before man ever set foot upon its surface. The continent contains amongst the oldest rocks in the world; some in Western Australia date back 3,000,000,000 years.

Australia is a vast land, over 7,600,000 square kilometres in area, which slumbered in the cradle of time for aeons before man ever set foot upon its surface. The continent contains amongst the oldest rocks in the world; some in Western Australia date back 3,000,000,000 years.
As the continents drifted apart Australia ctood alone, isolated but not sterile. There, safe from competition with placental mammals, marsupials flourished in diverse forms. Bird life, too, developed undisturbed.
Even when the Aborigines came to Australia, their impact upon the ecosystem was limited. Leading a hunter-gatherer existence, they relied upon continuity - reinforced in their Dreamtime rituals - in order to live.
The advent of the white man brought far greater changes. Twentieth-century, industrial man - with his cities, cars, factories and pollution - comes close to destroying the natural heritage of millennia. However, Australia is fortunate that its relatively small population is largely contained within a few urban areas. Beyond the cities, the timeless continent stretches away to distant horizons, unchanged and undimmed.
This magnificent book, packed with colour photographs, encapsulates the young nation and its cities - which look forward to the future - and the perpetual backdrop of the landscape that shall remain, as it always has been, the essential Australia.
