OF FETAL
DIAGNOSIS
Within the last two decades there has been consider-
able progress in medical genetics. This new informa-
tion has become available to increasingly large num-
bers of affected patients and their families, primarily
because of the development of genetic counselling
centres in most countries.
Prenatal diagnosis is one of the most rapidly de-
veloping areas in obstetrics, not only with regard to
the number of patients evaluated but also with regard
to the number of conditions which may be diagnosed.
Prenatal diagnosis with the option of termination
of pregnancy provides important reassurance for
couples at high risk of serious genetic disorders. The
role obstetrical genetics plays in decreasing the num-

to mention its social benefits.

ber of tragedies in the life of a family is obvious, not

The amount of knowledge in prenatal diagnosis
has grown with such extraordinary rapidity in the last
decade, that the subject has developed into a subspe-
cialty. Consequently changes have occurred in ante-
natal care of which no obstetrician can afford to be
» ,
unaware. Many will wish to take an active interest in
the field and indeed there is an urgent need for more
obstetricians to take on greater responsibility for the
provision of prenatal diagnostic services.
The A tlas of Fetal Diagnosis is a selected collection
of 400 colour photographs of several forms of fetal
malformations and chromosome aberrations illus-
trated by 100 ultrasound pictures mainly diagnosed
prenatally between 1977 and 1989 at the University
Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in Deb-
recen (Hungary) and at the Department of Medical
Genetics of the Churchill Hospital in Oxford. The
atlas should be regarded as a supplement to Obstetric
Genetics, written by Professor Zoltán Papp and pub-
lished by Akadémiai Kiadó (Budapest) in 1990. Vissza
