THE MOST IMPORTANT FEATURES OF THE ATLAS
The purpose of this atlas is to provide both graduate and postgraduate students, and also practising pathologist, with a collection of electron micrographs demonstrating the most typical alterations in cell organelles. The illustration material comprises 205 high-quality transmission and scanning electron micrographs mounted in 70 Plates. This collection of pictures represents some 30 years of experience in ultrastructural pathology and diagnostic electron microscopy. The atlas is presented in a new form of instructive approach, inviting the reader to discover how to evaluate electron microscopic pictures in many diseases, or in the diagnosis of neoplastic and dystrophic tissues. One to eight micrographs are mounted in each Plate. The subcellular structures to be identified in the micrographs are numbered. Each Plate is accompanied by two pages of text. The questions provide students and practising pathologists with guidelines how to examine the ultrastructure of abnormal cells and tissues. The comments provide a brief interpretation of the observed alterations, and advice on how to evaluate the details, leading to a diagnosis and differential diagnosis where appropriate. This didactic method offers practical suggestions for the detection of subcellular structures and has been found to be more effective than the classical descriptive approach to ultrastructural pathology.
