'A flower of humanity'—Ravel was so described by Marguerite Long, the esteemed concert pianist and interpreter of the French School and member of a circle that centred closely on Ravel and other composers of the day.
The author's association with Ravel prompted this authoritative and affectionate study of his music and character: to Ravel music was the whole world and his singularly generous spirit never admitted any feelings of rivalry.
A practising artist rather than a musicologist, Mme Long shows a delight and enthusiasm deriving from many years' experience of the music and, as with At the Piano with Debussy, this is expressed with an often engaging simplicity. Writing in collaboration with Professor Pierre Laumonier, the author offers an exposition of interpretative method based on her first-hand knowledge of the composer's work.
