Marguerite Long
At the piano with Debussy
With half-tone plates and 25 music examples in text
The virtuoso pianist. Marguerite Long, was Debussy's favourite interpreter. He initiated her into the teciiniques required to express his music to perfection and here she, in her turn, initiates the reader through her personal reminiscences of the composer. She describes her enriching friendship with Debussy with sensitivity and dedication, and gives a marvellous impression of what it was like to be with him, to play under his instruction and to hear such works as Pelléas et MeHsande for the first time. Unfamiliar aspects of Debussy are revealed, such as his personal vulnerability and his quiet courage in the face of grave ill health, whilst his ardent love for his second wife, Emma, and his daughter is illustrated in his enchanting letters to them. The author describes also her personal impressions of Debussy's musical contemporaries and relates fascinating anecdotes of legendary... Tovább

The author describes also her personal impressions of Debussy's musical contemporaries and relates fascinating anecdotes of legendary virtuosi such as Francis Planté, Paderewski and Pachmann.
Mme Long analyses in detail many of Debussy's works, such as L'Isle joyeuse. Études, the Préludes and Images II. She bases her own explanations faithfully on Debussy's strict instructions for the interpretation of the individual pieces; thus to the player this book has the value of personal tuition by the composer.
