ISBN 3-8055-4036-1 In 63 reports and review articles, this volume provides a look at virtually all research strategies now being used in the study of asthma and bronchial hyperreactivity. Featuring the best papers presented at an internationai meeting, the book shows how findings and techniques from the basic sciences can be applied to unravel the complexity of mechanisms affecting airway function. Therapeutic implications are alsó considered. The book has been subdivided into two main parts. The first features basic investigations into the pathophysiologic events underlying hypersensitivity reactions in the respiratory tract. Papers utilize findings on mast cells and their mediators, phospholipid metabolites, autonomic regulation, and inflammatory changes. New research on the leukotrienes, prostaglandins, platelet-activating f actor, and substance P is alsó presented in terms of its relevance to biochemical and immunologic hypersensitivity reactions. The second part is devoted to clinical problems. Reflecting the heterogeneity of asthma and related diseases, papers cover a broad rangé of topics, including the assessment of both established and experimentál chemical mediators and comparisons of their effectiveness in different patient populations. Readers will alsó find information on the sensitivity, safety, and costs of different bronchial provocation tests, the possible causes of non-allergic asthma, and the specific indications and contraindications for prescribing a particular therapeutic drug. The book concludes with seven brief symposia, each serving as a concise update of expert opinions on an important clinical problem. Thorough and well-organized in its coverage, the book will serve as a rich source of data and ideas for anyone concerned with the investigation or treatment of hypersensitivity reactions in the respiratory tract. Above all, the book demonstrates the growing awareness of the complexity of these reactions and the promise that further well-designed research will yield major advances at both basic and clinical levels.
