For almost three hundred years, until 612 BC, the small kingdom of Assyria dominated the Middle East. Its empire once extended from Iran to Egypt. The story of those years, the triumphs of the Assyrian kings in war and peace, their exploits in the hunting field, and the gods who watched over them, were recorded in stone on the walls of a succession of royal palaces. Dr Reade took part in the last British expéditions to the great Assyrian city of Nimrud, and lias himself discovered rock-sculptures of King Sennacherib. He has written extensively on the history and archaeology of ancient Mesopotamia, and his excavations at Tell Taya have thrown new light on early Assyria. He now works in the Department of Western Asiatic Antiquities at the British Muséum.
