Thai textiles, probably the best-known example of its indigenous handicrafts, form only part of the rich assortment of creative traditions and products presented in Arts and Crafts of Thailand. Here, portrayed in spectacular colour, are baskets, earthenware, water dippers, shimmering silk fabrics, as well as fine silverware, lacquer-ware, jewelry, furniture, wood carvings and altar tables. From the most basic traditions of village life and objects of everyday use in food preparation and storage, weaving, hunting and fishing, to the aristocratic tradition, change has come only in recent years as Thai society turns gradually towards Western styles of living. Ceremóniái life involves both the palaces and the temples, and includes all the regalia produced for special occasions and rituals. Alsó remarkably strong is the tradition of theatre arts, with its masks, puppets, dance costumes and musical instruments.
A beautiful and visually stunning book, Arts and Crafts of Thailand contains a collection of both ordinary and unusual objects, all of them designed and created with charm, taste and ingenuity, and all of immediate appeal to any home-maker or lover of the exotic.
