Gardens for Small Country Houses was first published by Country Life in 1912. The original edition with its black and white illustrations takes us back to that dream time at the very end of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth, when the Arts and Crafts Movement had evolved into country house architecture and then found its most delightfiil expression in the making of gardens.

This new edition, re-tided Arts and Crafts Gardens to disunguish it from the original book and published at the turn of the twentieth century, takes advantage of modern colour reproduction and colour printing technology. Whilst we cannot go back in tinie to re-take the original photographs we can at least savour in this edition a litde of what might have been had these techniques then been available. Colour photographs of Arts and Crafts gardens and houses as they are today together with reproductions of contemporary paintings and watercolours complement the original black and white photographs and bring new colour and light to a now vanished world.
Lawrence Weaver was an architect who acted as Architectural Editor at Country Life. His better known collaborator on this book, Gerti-ude Jekyll requires littie introduction. She too was a contributor to Country Lifevfhich also became the principal publisher of her books. By 1912 she was an established and influential garden designer as well as author of many books. In their collaboration on this book, the authors found common ground and revelled in their mutual intuitive approach to artistic and historic gardening ideas.
Readers of Arts and Crafts Gardens will find it no less fresh and pertinent than when it was first issued - as a practical handbook invaluable in garden restoration, for its insights into craftsmanship and planting relationships, and as a fascinating classic text of garden design. It is also a picture of a vanished age whose influence remains with us still.
Gertrude Jekyll's other gardening works are nearly all still in print today and her continuing influence on imaginative planting and design is, if anything, very much on an upswing.
'Gardens for SmuU Country Houses has the most
atmosphere of the period' -Jane Brown
