Fülszöveg

ARTISTS ON ART is an outstanding anthology of writings by 142 painters and sculptors over the last seven centuries. It gives direct access to the artists' own views on a rich variety of subjects: the place of the nude model in Life painting, approaches to landscape, techniques and aesthetics, the growth of academic training, as well as forthright views on other artists. It offers an immediacy which is often missing in art criticism. The text is full of cross-references to similar or contrasting opinions of the other artists which enable the reader to refer easily from one view to another and thus draw stimulating comparisons. There are alsó over 100 illustrations including portraits of most of the artists whose writings are quoted. This book shares the concern of Constable 'that the world should be inclined to look to painters for information on painting'. 'A unique anthology, fresh in content and fascinating in its unexpectedness of subject... a factual and exhaustive compendium .... Tovább
