Not all the stories are from our own immediate troubled world. Krock covered the Versailles Peace Treaty Conference and worked on the fabulous New York World as a reporter. His recollections of Wilson, Coolidge, Hoover, and the days of the Depression add immeasurably to our understanding of the development of present-day policies in Washington. Of particular interest is Krock's evaluation of Nixon as the first real "working" Vice-President, with interesting sidelights on Eisenhower's refusal to commit American troops to Vietnam despite Nixon's urging.
