ART OF THE AMERICAS
Here, in a single volume, is a complete pictorial survey of the art of the Western Hemisphere, from the prehistoric sculptors of Central America to the latest trends in the studios of New York, Mexico City, or Rio de Janeiro.
For the first time, the painting and sculpture of the 23 American republics are examined, illustrated, and authoritatively discussed in one volume, the first of the notable series of Art News Annuals to be devoted to a single theme. The 148 pages on the Art of the Americas are divided into five sections: A New World, the historical introduction which traces the current development of the arts on both American continents from 200 B. c. to the present day through text and charts; and four detailed parts covering the four major periods: I. Before Columbus; H. The Colonial Empires; HI. The Age of Romanticism; IV. The Present.

The artistic achievements of each period, and their relation to the main streams of the culture of the Americas, are clearly defined in many superb color plates and 150 black and white reproductions—each accompanied by succinct, explanatory text that is always printed on the same page as the illustration to which it refers. Many of the remarkable photographs were taken especially for this book. The manners, mor-

als, temper, and background of each period are reflected by representative prints —which, of all the arts, most closely reflect the life of the people. Rounding out the artistic picture of each period, there are bound-in a series of facsimile pages, each a complete group, from an important illustrated book of the respective time.
Art of the Americas, as the eighteenth Art News Annual, also contains, as a supplement, the same popular feature of earlier Annuals: the uniquely valuable compilation of the year's events, progress, prices, and other notable records in the field, famous as the Art News of the Year.
Arranged and written by the Editors of Art News, bound in permanent form, Art of the Americas contains fifty full-color plates, forty facsimile full-page reproductions of old prints, documents, illustrated pages from early books, an illustrated historical chart, and more than 150 other black and white pictures.
The magnificent aesthetic heritage of the Americas and its brilliant contemporary art combine to make Art of the Americas a museum in kalediscopic form to be explored at leisure and with great pleasure by laymen, or thoroughly, with new perspective by students of our civilization.
