PANORAMA OF WORLD ART
Two thousand years of the most intense artistic activity are the subject of this book. Two thousand years stretching from the earliest stirrings of creative talent in the Aegean area, through the glory of the Classical art that still awes and in-spires the world, to the flamboyance and degenera-tion of the end of the Hellenistic period a century or so before the birth of Christ.

Thehigh point isíifth-centuryAthens, wherethere arose that perfection of form and technique that we call Classical Greek art. Here, in the age of Perikies and Thucydides, of Sophocles, Euripides, and Socrates, there flourished alsó that abun-dance of creative genius that was to lay the foun-dations of all later European art and literature.
Professor Germán Hafner, of the University of Mainz, traces with consummate skill and enviable clarity the development of artistic expression through these twc millenniums and throughout the Greek and Aegean worlds. He rejects the notion that the art of the Classic age can be understood without reference to that of Minoan Crete and of Mycenae, and demonstrates convincingly how the unique qualities of Greek art arose from historical and political circumstances as well as from the talents of the creative artists. With the aid of a magnificent display of illustrations, Professor Hafner follows the course of Greek art from the simple geometric forms and decoration of the Early Helladic potters to the strongly naturalistic sculpture of the Hellenistic age, showing the inter-play of Greek genius with the foreign—particu-larly Oriental-influenceswith which it had contact.
Never before have all the arts of Crete, Mycenae, and ancient Greece been so attractively present-ed within the limits of a single volume.
