The inter-war period was a glamorous, vibrant
age. Art Deco was a new style that epitomised the
era and pervaded every aspect of life. Characterised
by clean lines, stylised flowers, and geometric
patterns, it was functional and modern.
Designers of the era celebrated the modern, yet
were often inspired by the ancient - Egyptian,
Aztec and Far Eastern influences were all evident
among the great designs of Lalique, Ruhlmann and
Barbier. At the same time, aspects of machine
design influenced the creation of everyday objects
such as cutlery, and encouraged the use of new
materials like Bakelite and chrome.
Art Deco painting embraces Surrealism, Cubism
and Expressionism. Artists such as Picasso,
Mondrian and Kandinsky pushed back the
boundaries of painting, enriching the visual
language of the era, but the most popular works,
however, were figurative.
