As a review of the 1985-86 auction season, Art at Auction provides an invaluable source of reference. With numerous articles contributed by scholars and experts on some of the more remarkable collections and objects, and well over 400 items illustrated in colour, it reflects the variety and interest of works that have appeared in the salerooms around the world.
In London some outstanding collections have come up for auction. Graham Reynolds discusses Continental miniature painting in relation to the late Sir Charles Clore's collection, a part of which was sold in March and the remainder will be sold in November 1986. Keith Andrews provides insights into a major collection of Old Master drawings formed by the late Dr Springell and his wife, and Guy M. Wilson of the Royal Armouries assesses the importance of a Civil War armoury housed at Littlecote, which was bought for the nation.

The appearance in New York of two paintings and three pieces of sculpture by Matisse from the Bakwin collection was seen as a major event and an opportunity for John L. Tancock to discuss the relationship between the artist's painting and sculpture. In a year in which the Museum of Modern Art staged a magnificent exhibition of the work of Toulouse-Lautrec, Richard Thomson focuses on the artist's poster designs, cidng examples that have recently appeared in the salerooms. It has also been a successful year for American paintings and the American decorative arts, and articles in both these areas have been contributed by Mary Black and Carol Eaton Hevner.
In addition to the lavish illustration of individual items of rare or particular interest throughout the book, there are further ardcles on Tang pottery, jewellery, scientific instruments and a CaroHngian manuscript. For both scholars and collectors, Art at Auction continues to present a fascinating visual record of activity in the art market.
