The world has seldom been at peace since the end of World War 2. Warfare ranging from sporadic outbursts of violence and guerrilla warfare in emergent nations to prolönged and open combat such as the bloody conf rontation of ideologies in Vietnam have involved Professional armies using increasingly sophisticated weaponry. In Europe since 1945 the 'cold war' has developed, albeit peacefully, into a highly-organized competition between West and East to maintain the balance of military power. This book features 48 pages of colour plates which show the uniforms of the armies and irregular forces engaged in actual fighting throughout the world and alsó the uniforms of the forces of N.A.T.O. and Warsaw Pact countries which are constantly engaged in the 'cold war'. Considerable detail has alsó been given on equipment and weapons as well as 'buttons and bows' so that a broader and deeper impression can be gained of the forces covered. The campaign histories included are necessarily brief but should provide a factual basis so that, those who wish to research further will at least have the correct date of operations involved and the locations over which they were conducted. This book has been written and illustrated by two former Regular soldiers in the British Army. Digby Smith, the author, is now well established in the field of military history and Michael Chappell, the illustrator, is wellknown to the readers of Blandford books as a talented military uniform artist.
