JOHN ARDEN
The setting of John Arden's play is the Border country during the reign of James V. While the representatives of England and Scotland are trying to secure peace, there is continuous strife on the Border between families like the Armstrongs, the Eliots and the Johnstones, and between their overlords in Scotland. The play is concerned with the events that led up to the hanging of one of these Border freebooters, Johnny Armstrong of Gilnockie, in 1530, and with the part played in them by Sir David Lindsay, Scottish diplomatist, Lord Lyon King of Arms and author of The Three Estates.
