HARRY MATHEWS
Armenian Papers POEMS 1954-1984
Armenian Papers is a selection of the poems of one of America's most important experimental writers, who has established a reputation not only as a poet but as the author of highly acclaimed novels such as The Conversions and Tlooth. The book reveals the organic nature of Mathews's thirty-year oeuvre by bringing together hard-to-find poems with other more familiar works, such as the two remarkable long sequences, "Trial Impressions" and "Armenian Papers," a poem of survival, love, and war in an imaginary landscape. The author cites as his themes "discovery, loss, rediscovery. . . . (and no stopping at that point). Of Course
I could hardly expect you to love me if I couldn't make up my mind about you.
If I thought love was pointless, how could I fail to repulse you?
I wouldn't expect your support if I derided beauty as skin-deep.
If I was a jerk, why should your intelligence tolerate it?
Who wants to fly his rocket ship through solid rock?
Who cares for strolling on the unpaved void of night?
Who takes icicles to bed in winter? Who likes his ice cream boiled?
Nobody wants that kind of world. Please agree. Vissza
